The Royal Springs Golf Course is located over an expanse of 300 acres of rolling hills, natural marsh, deciduous forests, lakes and wilderness, near Srinagar’s picturesque Cheshma Shahi (Royal Springs) garden, laid by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Designed by the renowned golf-course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1996, the course overlooks the Dal Lake against the backdrop of Zabarwan mountains. Signature (fifth) hole – has a sheer drop into a hillside filled with flowers. The green is amidst those flowers, and one side drops down to Dal Lake. It is perhaps the only course that has a variety of fruit trees interspersed along the fairways - apricot, peach, cherry, pear and of course, the famous Kashmiri apple trees! Pari Mahal, once a Buddhist Monastery , and later a Mughal observatory, is visible at all times. The Shankaracharya Temple, shikaras and houseboats appear, disappear, and reappear throughout the expanse of the course. Little wonder that it is considered the best golf course in India. Apart from being amongst the most picturesque courses, its undulating fairways and lightning-fast greens make it challenging too.
