Indian Wines – India's Big 3

 - Chateau Indage, Grover Vineyards, Sula Vineyards

Grover Vineyards

Location:
Nandi Hills, Bangalore, India
First wine launched in: 1992

"Grover Vineyards began as a passion of my father in 1988," says Kapil Grover. "He was a businessman, importing and marketing high-end machine tools, who travelled to France a lot and missed the wines when he was at home."

Kanwal Grover and son Kapil founded Grover Vineyards in 1988 on 40 acres of land at the foot of the Nandi Hills near Bangalore. Today, Grover Vineyards has over 200 acres with nine varieties of French wine grapes, selected from the original thirty-five varieties that were first planted, and are selling wine to France! They are part-owned by Veuve Clicquot, the world’s leading champagne house. Their best selling wine in India is Cabernet Shiraz. It accounts for almost 70% of the red wine produced by Grover Vineyards. La Reserve, made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes, and just the right wine with tandoori food, is India’s first barrel-aged wine – and Grover’s most acclaimed. 'La Reserve' in the super premium category was adjudged as the best new world Red Wine by Decanter - beating entries from Australia, Chile, New Zealand and Argentina.

Michel Rolland, one of the most influential winemakers in the world, is ‘consultant oenologue’ to Grover Vineyards. He consults with over 100 wineries throughout the world such as Casa Lapostolle in Chile and Robert Mondavi in California.

The third generation Grover is getting ready to join the family venture. Kapil Grover’s older daughter Karishma, 23, is currently gaining work experience in NAPA valley. She has a degree in Viticulture & Enology from University of California Davis.
