South Asian Nations @ Olympics
Together, the eight South Asian nations, have 1.63 billion people living in
their cities and villages – 25% of whom live below the poverty line. Lack of
infrastructure, especially in rural areas, creates other problems, foremost
being illiteracy, and unemployment. Women still remain disadvantaged in many
parts. Given these roadblocks, it is a marvel that the region, especially
India, has produced Olympians. Maldives is the most recent entrant to
Olympics – it debuted in 1988. Bangladesh and Bhutan made their first
appearance in 1984. SALT presents a snapshot of how the South Asian
countries have fared at the Olympics.
Bhutan
The Kingdom of Bhutan is a small landlocked country in the eastern Himalaya,
bordered by India and China. More than 50 percent of the population lives
half a day’s walk from the nearest motor road.
