‘Morning Walk’ – a film by Arup Dutta

‘Morning Walk’ is a contemporary, urban tale of two diverse families brought together by the chance encounter of two individuals and the revelation of a truth that follows. In the process, the film brings out the nuances of human relationships.

The film has Anupam Kher, Sharmila Tagore, Rajit Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Shayan Munshi, and Nargis in key roles. Avika Gor, the child star of the hit TV serial Balika Vadhu, makes her big-screen debut with the film.

Professor Joymohan (Anupam Kher) lives by himself in Kolkata, and suffers a heart-attack one morning, on his birthday. This is a wake-up call for him to spend more time with his small family in Mumbai - son (Rajit Kapoor), daughter-in-law (Divya Dutta) and grand-daughter (Avika Gor) - and mend broken bridges of the past. He surprises them by moving to Mumbai to stay with them. One day, on his morning walk, he meets his former student and friend Neelima (Sharmila Tagore), now a mother of two, who has carried within her the weight of a truth not known to anybody. Neelima’s bright and beautiful daughter, Anjali (Nargis), who wants to pursue her doctorate degree from the US, is also Professor Joymohan’s daughter. The rest follows.

The Characters

Anupam Kher as Joymohan is the professor who lives on his own in Kolkata and moves, after a heart attack, to Mumbai to live with his son Indra.

Sharmila Tagore as Neelima, lives with her daughter Anjali in Mumbai. Once within an abusive marriage, she is now a yoga instructor and is preparing to send her daughter to the US for higher studies.

Rajit Kapoor as Indra is a loving and caring son, caught up between the frictional relationship shared by his wife Rita with his father Joymohan

Divya Dutta as Rita personifies today’s working woman and is the sassy, assertive, aggressive daughter-in-law who wants her father-in-law to sell his Kolkata house to fund their new house in Mumbai. As deeper truths and relationships unfold, Rita is caught between her personal ambitions and her family.

Shayan Munshi as Ajay is a struggling singer, completely in love with Anjali.

Nargis as Anjali is the bubbly daughter of Neelima who is committed to pursuing higher studies in the US. She is devoted to Ajay and supports him in every possible way. The truth - of finding out that Professor Joymohan is her father – changes her life .....

Avika Gor as Gargi is Joymohan’s granddaughter who puts an instant smile on his face. A school-going child, she adores her grandfather and is overjoyed when he moves in with the family.

Music

The music of the film has been composed by Jeet Gannguli and the songs have been sung by Ustad Rashid Khan, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal , and Dibyendu Mukherjee. The music is not haunting but the song Manwa by Ustad Rashid Khan and Dibyendu Mukherjee is an energy-packed track and Dibyendu’s voice is soulful. The track has elements of Flamenco and Thumri.

‘Morning Walk’ is director Arup Dutta’s debut venture.
