Obama’s Tech Gurus By Kunal Mehta
When Barack Obama took office as the President of USA in January 2009, he created two new positions in his administration to help him run a more efficient, transparent and an effective government. He chose Vivek Kundra as his Chief Information Officer, and Aneesh Chopra as his Chief Technical Officer. Both are charismatic visionaries and known for their unconventional initiatives. . Vivek Kundra – ‘Transparency through Dashboards’Current Position: Federal Chief Information Officer (US Government) Age - 34 Alma Mater: University of Maryland, MS (Information Technology); University of Virginia’s Sorensen Institute for Political LeadershipObama appointed Vivek Kundra as USA’s first Chief Information Officer. "He will play a key role in making sure our government is running in the most secure, open, and efficient way possible," Obama said. Kundra’s job is to manage $71 billion in annual technology spending across 10,000 government systems and 800 projects. (The US government is the largest single buyer of technology in the world at $71 billion dollars annually.) And he wants to keep a vigilant eye on all this through – Dashboards. True to his word, he unveiled the new U.S. Federal IT Dashboard on June 30 at the Personal Democracy Forum 2009 in New York City. The IT Dashboard is a new website that provides transparency into the U.S. government’s $71 billion technology budget, enabling federal agencies and the general public to view details of all active government technology projects, including the purpose, schedule and budget of each project, the name and photo of the federal official responsible and the names of contractors working on the project - details that have never been made public before.Read the entire article in the print issue of SALT
Aneesh Paul Chopra – ‘Actionable Initiatives’ Current Position: Federal Chief Technology Officer , and the Associate Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (since May 2009)Born – July 13, 1972 Hometown: Trenton, N.J. Alma Mater: Johns Hopkins University, B.A. (Public Health), 1994; Harvard University, M.A. (Public Policy), 1997 President Barack Obama nominated Aneesh Chopra as the nation’s first Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in April 2009. He will work closely with Vivek Kundra, the Federal Chief Information Officer (CIO), to develop and implement the President's ambitious technology agenda. The White House describes the relationship between the CIO and CTO roles as follows: The choice of Aneesh to the country’s highest technology office came as a surprise to Silicon Valley. Aneesh is not steeped in technology degrees nor has any ties with the technology industry.
