MANI KAUL AND HIS CINEMA

Mani Kaul looked at cinema “through layers of multiple experiences.” Average cine-goers could seldom relate to his films – ‘Uski Roti’, ‘Duvidha’ and ‘Ashadh Ka Ek Din’, among others, ran to scantily attended halls. None had a commercial afterlife. Yet, critics and students of serious cinema saw in his films something they had never seen before in Indian cinema. His film ‘Satah Se Uthatha Aadmi’ (1980), based on poet Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981. ‘Siddheshwari’ and the documentary ‘Dhrupad,’ were screened at New York Film Festival. Both films were praised for their production skills.

 A student of the legendary Ritwik Ghatak at the Film Training Institute of India (FTII), Mani Kaul also taught at his alma mater.  As a mentor, he encouraged his students to discover their own way of looking at things. He was also an accomplished musician who played the Veena and taught Dhrupad music. He passed on in 2011. He was 66.
