MANI KAUL AND HIS CINEMA By Udayan Vajpeyi
Mani Kaul looked at cinema “through layers of
multiple experiences.” Average cine-goers could seldom relate to his films –
‘Uski Roti’, ‘Duvidha’ and ‘Ashadh Ka Ek Din’, among others, ran to scantily
attended halls. None had a commercial afterlife. Yet, critics and students
of serious cinema saw in his films something they had never seen before in
Indian cinema. His film ‘Satah Se Uthatha Aadmi’ (1980), based on poet
Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981.
‘Siddheshwari’ and the documentary ‘Dhrupad,’ were screened at New York Film
Festival. Both films were praised for their production skills.
